Embark on a journey, retracing the path of the revered saint during his transformative 3-month stay on Malta. Begin the day at the St. Paul’s Shipwreck Church in Valletta, adorned with relics and treasures, including a part of the column on which St. Paul was beheaded. Explore the Mellieha cave church, since early days a site for pilgrims, drawn to it by the Siculo-Byzantine painting of the Madonna and Child on the bare rock face. Reflect on the shores of St. Paul’s Bay, the believed site of the shipwreck, and view the church where the locals lit a fire to warm the survivors, witnessing the miraculous viper incident. Continue to Naxxar and Rabat, where Paul’s preaching echoes, culminating in a walking tour of Mdina, where Publius’s home, turned into the first church, stood in place of the Cathedral. Visit the grotto where St. Paul lived, prayed, and preached during his 3-month stay. This transformative tour, blending spirituality and history, promises an enriching exploration of Malta’s sacred sites and ancient traditions.
The aim of this tour is to visit the sites covered by 'Our Father Paul', during his 3-month long stay on Malta, after his ship ran aground when en route to Rome to be tried, as was his right, as a Roman citizen.
The day starts with a visit of the Church of the Bonfire, one of the oldest churches in Valletta and a church that boasts many treasures, amongst which two relics of the saint, a part of the column on which he was beheaded, and the right wrist bone.
The tour moves on to the Mellieha cave church, to view a painting of the Madonna on the rock face, one that is attributed to St. Luke, shipwrecked on Malta together with St. Paul. The church has long been a Marian shrine, and a site for pilgrims who used to travel here from all over the island, some on foot, others by donkey, and spend the night in the little rooms on the side of the verandah, which gives the most spectacular views of the channel that separates Malta from its sister smaller islands.
The next very important visit will be that of St. Paul's Bay, just the part of the shore, across from the islands, where the ship is believed to have been wrecked. This is a very removed part of the shore, where the group is able to reflect on Chapters 27 and 28 of the Acts of the Apostles, which deal with Paul's shipwreck on Malta.
A little distance away is the Church of the Bonfire, just where it is thought that the locals lit up a fire, to warm up Paul and his fellow survivors, when having swam to shore. It was here that he was bitten by the viper, which he shook back into the fire, never to have been affected by the venom.
The tour next takes us to Naxxar, where another chapel stands on the site from where Paul's preaching carried to the island of Gozo.
Next on our itinerary will be Rabat, where we will visit the grotto where the saint lived, prayed and preached during much of his 3-month long stay on the island.
The day will end with a walking tour of Mdina, where the Cathedral takes pride of place, standing on what is believed to have been the site for the home of Publius, the Roman governor. Publius's father was terminally ill, and Paul prayed over him and cured him. According to tradition, Paul had Publius converted, appointing him Bishop. Publius’ home, then became a first church for the emerging Christian community.
